Beyond the Grandstand: Audience Segmentation for Live Events

Every Fan, A Different Story
Live event production has moved beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. Today’s audiences are more diverse than ever, comprising general admission fans, hospitality guests, corporate partners, and die-hard team supporters. So how do you create a massive, unified visual spectacle while still acknowledging and celebrating these distinct groups? The answer lies in audience segmentation—a technique that transforms a homogenous crowd into a dynamic, multi-layered visual canvas.
While a full-stadium, single-color pulse of light—like the kind we first pioneered with Coldplay on their Mylo Xyloto tour—delivers an unparalleled moment of unity, the next frontier of immersive design is personalization at scale. It’s about creating targeted visual conversations within the larger spectacle. This requires technology that is not only powerful and reliable but also flexible enough to handle complex, data-driven creative demands.
Case Study: The Formula One 75th Anniversary
For a perfect illustration of this principle in action, look no further than the F1 75 event at The O2 Arena in February 2025. This was a celebration of 75 years of Formula 1, bringing together all 10 teams, 20 drivers, and thousands of fans for a live broadcast event featuring performances from Take That and Kane Brown. The creative challenge was multifaceted: entertain the global broadcast audience, create an electric in-arena atmosphere, and speak directly to the various fan and hospitality groups in attendance.
For this event, we deployed 13,000 units of our versatile XyloPendant. The key was customization. We created custom-branded Pendants for each of the 10 separate F1 teams, for different tiers of hospitality, and for general admission ticket holders. This immediately created a sense of identity and belonging for every attendee. A Mercedes fan in one section could light up in silver, while a Ferrari fan in another could glow red—all while being part of a larger, coordinated show.
The Power of Strategic Distribution
This level of segmentation is only possible through meticulous planning and execution. Our dedicated Distro team was tasked with positioning all 13,000 XyloPendants around the arena according to a precise map. This plan was directly tied to the Creative Team's vision for the show's dynamic effects. By knowing exactly where each type of pendant was located, show programmers could:
Isolate fans of a specific team when their driver was announced.
Create pulsing effects exclusive to hospitality areas during a VIP moment.
Trigger visual 'battles' between team colors across the arena.
Unify the entire crowd in a single color for moments of collective celebration.
This strategic placement gave the creative team an incredibly sophisticated palette to work with, allowing them to craft lighting cues that were meaningful, targeted, and perfect for the live broadcast narrative.
From the Racetrack to the Boardroom
The applications for this technology extend far beyond the world of sport. Imagine a corporate conference for a client like Google or Samsung. With segmented Xylobands, you could illuminate the sales team in one color, the marketing team in another, and engineering in a third during a CEO’s address. At a festival like PRIMER in Athens, you could create distinct lighting identities for GA, VIP, and backstage pass holders, enhancing the experience for each tier.
We’ve applied similar principles for a diverse range of clients, from broadcast partners like the BBC and ITV—where seat-based distribution on shows like 'Beat The Chasers' creates clean vertical and horizontal movements for the camera—to electrifying sporting events like the Rugby World Cup Final. The ability to control light with this degree of precision empowers event producers and live-experience designers to tell more complex and compelling stories.
The future of live events is about creating personal connections within a mass experience. By moving beyond the monolithic crowd and embracing intelligent segmentation, Xylobands provides the tools to build a spectacle that is both universally breathtaking and deeply personal, ensuring every single attendee feels like part of the show.
