From the Studio to the Living Room: Mastering the Broadcast Moment with Immersive Event Technology

A Legacy Forged in Light: From Glastonbury to the Global Broadcast
The story of Xylobands begins not in a broadcast studio, but in a field, inspired by a single lyric. During Coldplay’s 2011 Glastonbury set, the line "Lights will guide you home" sparked an idea in our director, Jason Regler: what if the audience could become the light show? This led to the creation of the original Coldplay Xylobands for the Mylo Xyloto tour, a revolutionary step that transformed the nature of LED crowd experiences. The same core principle—unifying a crowd through light—has been meticulously adapted from festival fields to the high-stakes, high-definition world of broadcast television.
The ITV Partnership: A 15-Year Masterclass in Broadcast Engagement
For over 15 years, Xylobands has been a trusted partner for ITV, one of the UK’s leading broadcasters. Our collaboration began with a full-circle moment: Coldplay’s performance on The X Factor final in 2012, where our technology illuminated the studio audience. Since then, Xylobands have become an integral part of some of television’s most-watched programs, including Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, The Voice, and The Masked Singer.
Working in a broadcast environment presents a unique set of challenges. Unlike a one-off concert, the technology must perform flawlessly, take after take, under the intense scrutiny of HD cameras. The light must not only create an atmosphere for the studio audience but also translate effectively to the millions of viewers watching at home. It requires a level of precision, reliability, and technical artistry that goes far beyond a simple flash of light.
The Technical Artistry: Engineering Light for the Close-Up
The recent seasons of ITV’s hit show Beat The Chasers serve as a perfect case study in the technical execution of broadcast-focused LED experiences. For these productions, the studio audience was armed with over 5,000 Mk5 and Xylo Classic wristbands. The critical element here was not just the technology itself, but its strategic deployment.
By executing a meticulous seat-based wristband distribution plan, our technicians could treat the audience as a dynamic, living set piece. This allowed the show’s creative team to design complex, programmed light movements that flowed across the studio with perfect synchronization.
This approach enabled the creation of stunning visual cues that amplified the on-screen drama. Imagine a wave of blue light sweeping vertically up the stands as a contestant answers correctly, or a pulsing red effect rippling horizontally across the crowd to signify a Chaser’s advance. This is the power of radio controlled LED wristbands when used with surgical precision. It’s a form of wearable LED technology that transforms passive viewers into an active part of the narrative, enhancing the spectacle for both the live attendees and the television audience.
Beyond Broadcast: Versatility Across Global Stages
While our work with ITV showcases our expertise in broadcast, the same foundational LED event technology powers a vast range of immersive events worldwide. The system is designed for scalability and adaptability, allowing us to cater to any environment or creative vision.
High-Octane Corporate Event Activations
For the 75th anniversary of Formula 1, we were brought in to light up The O2 Arena in London. We deployed 13,000 custom Xylo Pendants—a form of LED lanyards—which were branded for each of the 10 race teams and various hospitality tiers. This project demonstrates how custom LED wristbands and wearables can be used for sophisticated audience segmentation and brand reinforcement at major corporate event activations.
Unifying Festival Crowds
At the other end of the spectrum, Xylobands are a natural fit for the high-energy atmosphere of music festivals. At recent editions of PRIMER Music Festival in Athens, our festival wristbands synchronized with the sets of international DJs, immersing tens of thousands of fans in a collective visual experience that matched the energy of the music.
Designing for Sustainability in Spectacle
Innovation goes hand-in-hand with responsibility. Across our long partnership with ITV, every wristband used was either reused for a future show or responsibly recycled. This commitment to sustainability is a core part of our operational philosophy and is implemented across projects of all scales, from the multi-night residency of Wizkid at The O2 to our ongoing broadcast work. We believe that creating unforgettable moments should not come at an environmental cost.
From a flash of inspiration at a festival to becoming a key component of modern broadcast production, the journey of Xylo Bands has been driven by a single goal: to deepen the connection between an artist, a brand, or a show and its audience. By turning the crowd into the canvas, LED bands offer a powerful tool for today’s experience designers. It’s about creating a moment of unity, a shared spectacle that resonates long after the lights go down, whether you’re in the front row of a stadium or on your sofa at home.
